YAYOI KUSAMA

WORKING TOGETHER

In November 2022 M+, Hong Kong’s global museum of visual culture, opened an exhibition of renowned artist Yayoi Kusama’s work, entitled Yayoi Kusama: 1945 to Now. It was the largest retrospective of Kusama’s work in Asia, outside of Japan. As part of the collection of exclusive merchandise, we were asked to create a set of bespoke Yayoi Kusama ping pong bats.

Yayoi’s bio

Renowned Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is celebrated for her vivid paintings, sculptures, and installations. In collaboration with M+ Shop, this exclusive design showcases her world-famous signature style. Celebrating one of the most popular sports in Hong Kong, Kusama’s Sex Obsession artwork featured on the bat was the inspiration for this design.

Avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama dazzles audiences worldwide with her immersive aesthetic that embraces light and polka dots across her sculptures and installations. The artist first rose to prominence in 1960s New York, where she staged provocative Happenings and exhibited hallucinatory paintings of loops and dots that she called “Infinity Nets.” Kusama also influenced Andy Warhol and was a prominent figure in the rise of feminism and Pop art.
