I love the fact that they can be displayed on brackets- was a gift for my 17 year old who is ping ping mad. They are beautifully made and look fantastic on the wall in his bedroom! Quirky artwork and really nice to play with too. Easy, fast delivery and they were packaged beautifully, each one came in its own drawstring bag too. Really happy.

We love your Ping Pong bats and balls, so I have bought these as a surprise present for my partner. Do we play? No – but we will! However, what we do appreciate is supporting local businesses and buying something that is lovingly crafted, well designed and fun. James Joyce’s work has appeared on gallery walls, in print and at large scale. Here, the canvas is somewhat smaller.
Each ArtBat carries a different composition from No Laughing Matter, turning James’s bold graphic language into an object made to be held, played with and lived with.
Made from Ayous and Populus wood with air-dried natural rubber, each ArtBat is screen printed and finished with James Joyce’s name on the handle and our signature brass disc.
Designed as an artwork you can pick up and play with, then put back on display when the game is over.
Almost ten years after James Joyce created a one-off ArtBat for Art of Ping Pong, we caught up with him to talk about returning for a full collection, the story behind the collapsed clown and why art doesn't always have to stay on the wall.
AoPP: Where did the artwork behind this collection begin?
James: It goes back to 2013, when I was invited to take part in a group show at Mark Hix’s gallery beneath Tramshed in Shoreditch. I’d been given a huge wall facing the entrance, so it needed impact. I created two 1.75-metre paintings: a collapsed yellow acid smiley and a clown face I’d originally drawn for a club night at 93 Feet East. Mark ended up buying them both.
AoPP: The yellow face went on to become part of Banksy’s Dismaland. What happened to the clown?
James: Banksy had seen the paintings at Mark’s restaurant and got in touch about a new show he was planning. We went with the yellow face, which became a rotating video installation at Dismaland in 2015. The clown went its own way and became an image I’ve kept returning to ever since.
AoPP: Your relationship with Art of Ping Pong goes back almost ten years. How did that begin?
James: In 2016 I was invited to create a hand-painted paddle for an Art of Ping Pong exhibition and charity auction. That started the relationship, and now, ten years later, we’ve come back together to create a full collection.
AoPP: These pieces are designed to be played with and lived with. How do you feel about your artwork existing in that way?
James: I’m all for it. I like the idea of the work being handled and lived with, rather than purely looked at. It gives it another kind of life.
Absolutely! Being a ping pong fanatic, our founder would never have created a bat that compromised the game itself.
All the materials used are of the highest quality, and the carefully screen-printed rubber allows for great playability. Resulting in a great balance of art and table tennis excellence.
