Limited edition of 25, individually signed and numbered, No Laughing Matter brings one of James Joyce’s most enduring images into play.

First appearing in James’s work in 2013, the collapsed clown is reimagined across the ArtTable, printed directly onto birch plywood so the natural grain remains visible. James’s black linework is picked out in gloss varnish, catching the light against the otherwise matt surface.

Artist

British artist James Joyce works across painting, drawing, sculpture and design. His bold, graphic visual language combines humour, wit and the absurd, often reducing familiar symbols and faces to their simplest forms.

In 2016, James hand-painted his collapsed clown onto a one-off paddle for an Art of Ping Pong exhibition. Almost ten years later, No Laughing Matter brings James and AoPP back together, expanding that original encounter into a full collection.

We produce our Artist Edition ArtTables in small production runs, typically over two weeks. Depending on when your order is placed, your ArtTable may take up to two weeks to be ready.

We treat every ArtTable as a work of art when it comes to packing and delivery. After being carefully checked, each ArtTable is packed in our custom-made box to ensure the artwork is protected fully.

Each ArtTable is made from premium-grade birch plywood and meticulously hand-finished in our workshop. From the natural character of the timber to the final surface finish, every detail is carefully considered to create an object designed to be displayed, played on and lived with.

For No Laughing Matter, we developed a different printing and finishing process to bring out the particular qualities of James’s artwork.

The birch plywood is pre-oiled before printing, allowing the natural wood grain to remain visible through the work. A layer of white ink beneath the graphic elements softens the grain and gives them greater depth, while James’s black linework is picked out in gloss spot varnish against the otherwise matt surface, catching the light as you move around the table and adding another dimension to the artwork.

Every ArtTable is personally signed off and carefully packed by our team, a final touch of human care before it leaves our studio.

OFF THE WALL AND ON WITH THE GAME

IN CONVERSATION WITH JAMES JOYCE

Almost ten years after James Joyce created a one-off ArtBat for Art of Ping Pong, we caught up with him to talk about returning for a full collection, the story behind the collapsed clown and why art doesn't always have to stay on the wall.

AoPP: Where did the artwork behind this collection begin?


James: It goes back to 2013, when I was invited to take part in a group show at Mark Hix’s gallery beneath Tramshed in Shoreditch. I’d been given a huge wall facing the entrance, so it needed impact. I created two 1.75-metre paintings: a collapsed yellow acid smiley and a clown face I’d originally drawn for a club night at 93 Feet East. Mark ended up buying them both.


AoPP: The yellow face went on to become part of Banksy’s Dismaland. What happened to the clown?


James: Banksy had seen the paintings at Mark’s restaurant and got in touch about a new show he was planning. We went with the yellow face, which became a rotating video installation at Dismaland in 2015. The clown went its own way and became an image I’ve kept returning to ever since.


AoPP: Your relationship with Art of Ping Pong goes back almost ten years. How did that begin?


James: In 2016 I was invited to create a hand-painted paddle for an Art of Ping Pong exhibition and charity auction. That started the relationship, and now, ten years later, we’ve come back together to create a full collection.


AoPP: These pieces are designed to be played with and lived with. How do you feel about your artwork existing in that way?


James: I’m all for it. I like the idea of the work being handled and lived with, rather than purely looked at. It gives it another kind of life.

FAQs

It looks so cool – but can you actually play a good game on it?

Absolutely! Our founder is a ping pong fanatic, so compromising on the game would never have been an option. The enjoyment of the gameplay had to match the quality of the art on the wall. We weren’t interested in creating a novelty product that we would soon become bored of.

Does it come ready to use?

Yes – you'll be playing as soon as you take it out of the box!

Each ArtTable comes pre-assembled and ready for instant use with its own solid net, two table tennis bats and four balls.

To hang your ArtTable on the wall, we provide our custom wall bracket that uses a ‘French Cleat’ system to hold it to the wall securely. It must be hung vertically; the French Cleat design will not work horizontally.

Screws and wall plugs are also provided, but as wall materials vary, please make sure you seek advice on suitable screws and wall plugs by contacting your local specialised dealer.
